Inspiring Sunday: Reputation by Warren Buffet.
Sunday, 7 September 2008
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”
Warren Buffet.
The richest man in the world, with an estimated net worth of $62 billion as of last count, must know what he is talking about. Those words also rings true for bloggers. Often, we don’t know each other personally, relying instead on reputation and integrity.
Just look at Maki of DoshDosh.com. Nobody knows anything personal about him (well, maybe his close friends do) except that he’s blogging from Canada, a student (or has he finished college now?), the field he is studying isn’t web development, and he loves cute anime girls. But a lot of bloggers hang on to every word he writes in his blog. Unknown yet weilds authority over a group of people. Such is the power of integrity.
Do we, as bloggers, strive to build a reputation of integrity?

A great example using Maki from Dosh Dosh. One of the few who isn’t strutting around saying how much he makes or living the “life style” of a dot com mogul. You don’t see Warren Buffett flash his billions either. He’s still in Omaha minding his own business.
It just goes to show, those who have it, don’t flaunt it.

I think that the most important part of that quote is realizing how quickly you can ruin your reputation. People have to always be aware how important their reputation is. Once you tarnish it, it is very hard to build back up.

Maki has other sites, maybe that’s where he makes most of his money. But, yeah, we admire those kind of people. Even Gates is okay. He doesn’t look like the World’s 3rd richest man at all.
@ Fred
Your right. That’s the point. We should be careful in what we do or write. Doesn’t take much to bring it all down.
But we like pointing out the positive side of life.

I know many people who are rich and not famous, for example, the second richest man at present is a man in mexico, owning a telecom company and no one even knows about his personal life, even his age is unknown to many.

Yes, most rich folks like to keep a low profile. It’s a dangerous world, after all.
