Taking the blog readability test.
Friday, 19 September 2008
When it comes to IQ, the higher we rank, the more proud we are. However, should we still feel the same way when it comes to our blogs’ level of English?
English is one of our least favorite subject, just a rung above mathematics. Ugh, we hate grammar rules.
However, knowing the language is a necessity and we are in awe of people who can get their points across without too much fuss. That’s what we try to strive for in ReapMoneyOnline.
So here’s this online IQ tests for blogs, the Blog Readability Test. For fun, we ran 3 blogs we visit often through the test and here are the results:
| Problogger.net | DoshDosh.com | TurnipofPower.com |
|
|
It is said that our readership should determine the readability of our blogs. Thus, a PhD blogger with fellow PhD readers can be expected to have a genius reading level for his blog. But for us, the more people who can read and understand RMO, the better. So we want to attain Turnip’s level, which is actually not an easy thing to do. Our level at the moment is Junior High.
Try this online test, it’s fun, at the least.

I tried it before – and i agree with you – the blog readibility should be elementary level. I am trying to achieve that too. hehe. But with this English thing – that’s gonna be lot of hardwork.

Problogger.net is genius level?
I think its good to try to dumb it down alittle only because makes you use more examples and explain thing more thoroughly. Good post!

I agree that readability is very important, along with visual impact. Sadly, I find many blog sites to be so visually BUSY, that it is just crazy! Trashed up with so much junk and links and ads…most of it a waste of time. Who reads that stuff? Who actually clicks on the junk? Give me a simple, quick-loading site with new content and I am happy to stick around and read, at WHATEVER level of English.

Whenever I try that quiz, I always fall in elementary school level. I always hope that my score will accelerate but I am not lucky at all.
But when I tried my Facebook and my multiply site, I always get the college level. I guess it’s not checking the grammar but the tool that the site is using.
I have my blog in my multiply also (to which I don’t update) and most of the post there were written in Filipino.

@ Bloggista
Engrish also isn’t your favorite subject, eh?
@ Rick
W don’t feel that ProBlogger has a genius-level English. His articles are easy to understand. Maybe some technical terms sprinkled throughout his articles got picked up.
@ Doug
Ahem, we may need to clean up RMO a bit then.
@ Manilenya
First, your English is way better than ours. Maybe that’s why you got the elementary level. We believe it’s harder to get down to that level than score higher.
Your multiply site proved our “theory.” We believe that whenever the software came across a word it can’t understand, it somehow racks it up as a highly intelligent technical jargon.
@ Lux
Well, what can be expected from a cat? A pure white aristocratic looking one at that. You have to live up to how you look, we suppose. BTW, are you on a diet?
@ NukeIt
Your already posting college-level stuff. “Security conscience,” that sounded like one of our college professors. Btw, those mini-bikes from electronic parts are way cool!
@ Emma
We think it depends on our audience. The RMO team (us) are newbies at web development so RMO is also written for other newbies.
We can’t discuss stuff lie experts even if we know how to because web development and internet marketing is already difficult enough for the uninitiated without the technical jargon.
For mid-level and expert bloggers and developers, there’s DoshDosh. Where they discuss concepts and ideas. These folks will be totally bored with RMO.
So it really depends on who we are writing for.
