PlatinumSEO is a comprehensive Search Engine Optimization (SEO) WordPress plugin that comes with everything but the kitchen sink. However, before we tackle it, let’s make sure that our permalinks are already search engine friendly.

WordPress’ permalinks out-of-the-box provides a string of symbols and numbers for the title of our blog or posts. We have to set it before we make our first post as all posts prior to the change will become inaccessible, which is exactly what happened to RMO’s first.

To prettify our permalinks, simply do the following:

Go to WordPress admin dashboard, then settings and permalinks.

Select an option from the Common Settings. For RMO, we chose Month and Name then customized it by removing /%year%.

Save the changes.

In PlatinumSEO, aside from the usual Title, Description, and Keywords options available when we write a post, we also have a choice not to allow search bots index the post or NoFollow all outgoing links. We want to highlight the importance of the title and description fields.

The title field is what appears as the post title in Search Engine Result Pages (SERP). If we leave it blank, our original post title will appear. We can make use of it by having a different, more search-friendly title for our posts. The description field is what appears below our post title in the SERPs. It is best to put a human-readable statement here–not stuff it with keywords–something that will convince surfers that we have what they are looking for and click through to our blogs. In the image below, the original title for the post was “sell electronic products online with oronjo.”

In PlatinumSEO’s settings page (admin ==> settings==>platinumSEO), there are even more options to choose from or fill in. Right there on the top part are major SEO techniques made automatic: Home Title, Description, and Keywords and, yes, Rewrite post titles or URLS.

PlatinumSEO will format our post titles or URLs that appear in the browser tab bar from something like “ReapMoneyOnline|WordPress plugin to make post URLs search engine friendly” into something like “WordPress plugin to make post URLs search engine friendly|ReapMoneyOnline.” All done without us going deep into the header.php code. Pro bloggers say that this simple change will make our blogs more click-friendly. We don’t have enough experience to verify this but if they say it can help, why not?

That one function makes it worthwhile to install PlatinumSEO. However, there are also Nofollow options that will prevent our blog from leaking page rank (PR) or getting penalized for duplicate content (Although Jill Whalen says Google does not penalize duplicate content).

Did this wonderful plugin worked for RMO? Unfortunately, it worked too well for its own good. Even after unchecking all NoFollow options and installing another DoFollow plugin, PlatinumSEO still tagged all links in the comment form with NoFollow. RMO is a DoFollow blog right from the start and we don’t want to change that. However, for NoFollow blogs, this plugin is worth a try. With it, a fresh blog can easily attain PR3 with a dozen quality inbounds or incoming links.

UPDATE……………………..

Rajesh of TechBlissOnline.com, says PlatinumSEO does not specifically do a nofollow on comments. Please see his post on the benefits of PlatinumSEO to learn more about it.

We are back to square one with SEO plugins, good old All-in-One from Uberdose. It’s good enough with SEO without the NoFollow and indexing options. For the search engine friendly post title or URLs, we turned to a tutorial by TheSiteWizard.com. It involved hacking the header.php but is simple enough to follow.

Here is what we did with RMO, with slight modifications from the original tut:

1. In WordPress dashboard menu, click design, then theme editor.

2. On the right-side bar is a list of all files that comprise the current theme, click on Header (header.php) to open it.

3. Create a temporary backup of the header.php file in case something goes wrong by copy-pasting all the codes into Notepad.

4. Locate the following code…

<title><?php bloginfo(’name’); ?> <?php if ( is_single() ) { ?> &raquo; Blog Archive <?php } ?> <?php wp_title(); ?></title>

5. Change the aforementioned code into following to put the post title before the blog name…

<title><?php wp_title(); ?> - <?php bloginfo(’name’); ?></title>

6. Click the button “Update File” at the bottom of the file editor and view a post to check if the URL has changed.

7. If everything looks fine, discard the temporary back-up in the Notepad. Otherwise, copy-paste its content back into the header.php file and click the “Update File” button to restore it.

Original tutorial on TheSiteWizard.com found here. The code may not be the same across themes, the trick is to look for the <title> tag.

ReapMoneyOnline will serve up quotes and stories that will inspire us online entrepreneurs every Sunday. SOmething to lighten up the weekly fare of make money online and web development tips.

To start the ball rolling, we are sharing a recent story book project of our elder daugther, Merci. We have to illustrate 12 pages of The Ant and the Dove fable in watercolor.

The Ant and the Dove

An ant went to the river to drink…

but he fell and couldn’t swim back to the river bank.

A dove saw the ant in danger…

he dropped a leaf in the water to serve as a boat for the ant.

The ant immediately climbed into it and thanked the dove…

“someday I may also be able to help you,” said he.

A few days later, the ant saw a man with a bow and arrow…

ready to shoot at the dove!

The ant bit the man’s leg…

and the man jumped!

So his arrow missed the dove.

The dove thanked the ant immediately flew away to safety.

MORAL LESSON:

Drop on us and we will drop back on you.

ReapMoneyOnline is a DoFollow blog. We believe in rewarding readers who interact with the blog authors or with each other. RMO has installed the following WordPress plugins to remove the NoFollow tag from comment authors and for them to benefit fully from their comments:

1. NoFollow Free by Michelle.

We have been using NoFollow Free for a nearly a year and it’s one of the most hassle-free way to remove “nofollow” tags. It also comes with it’s own top commentators/commenters widget. The author requests that whoever uses it help spread the word.

2. CommentLuv plugin by FiddyP.

This is one of our favorite WordPress plugin. CommentLuv retrieves the latest post of the commenter if the URL placed on the comment form is a blog and parses it with his/her comment. Coupled with NoFollow Free, this plugin automatically creates an outbound link to the post that can be followed by bots, an SEO technique called deep linking.

3. KeywordLuv by Scratch99.

RMO tries its best to reply to comments ASAP. It will be nicer to reply to a name than to keywords used as anchor text so we installed KeywordLuv. With this plugin in place, comment authors can now use both a name AND anchor text in the name field of the comment form, simply enter “yourname@yourkeywords.” Placing RMO@make money online in the field returns RMO from make money online in the comment form.

ReapMoneyOnline’s comment system rewards comment authors with two (2) DoFollow links back to their blogs: (1) a link to the home page (or anywhere in their blog) with their chosen anchor text and (2) a deep-link to their latest post via CommentLuv.

Being a DoFollow blog has two (2) disadvantages: (1) RMO holds PR like a basket holds water and (2) It has become a target for spammers, like all DoFollow blogs in the make-money-online niche. To minimize PR leakage and spams, RMO will implement the following comment policy:

RMO does not manually moderate comments. We totally rely on Akismet to classify what is spam and what is not. Akismet places what it cannot immediately identify as spam in the moderation queu.

Do not place a link within the comment itself. KeywordLuv and CommentLuv will do the linkng. We are being deluged with comment spam and Akismet has been holding for moderation legitimate comments with links in them. Please understand that RMO’s queu has 35 to 40 long spams in it daily. Any legitimate comment can get lost in between.

RMO will only accept comment URLs from other blogs. Make a blog or leave the website field blank.

Comments must be relevant to the topic or discussion. Anyway, we should not comment on anything that we know nothing about.

Comments with links going to what Google perceives as bad neighborhood will be deleted.

ReapMoneyOnline appreciates most of the comments made by our readers and remains steadfast in supporting our friends.

Anybody heard of Cuil? It is pronounced as “cool” (we thought it was cuill) and is the brainchild of Ann Patterson, ex-google engineer whose last search engine technology was itself bought by Google in 2004 and incorporated in it’s own system. Patterson isn’t selling this time, relying instead on a $33 million venture capital to try and eclipse the search engine giant.

Patterson (who was disenchanted with Google), her husband Tom Costello, Russell Energy, and Louis Monier (the last 2 also ex-google engineers), have been laboring quietly the past year to create what they believe is the most comprehensive and efficient search engine yet, with an index that covers 120 billion Web pages. Google has stopped counting the pages it has indexed at around 8 billion but still believe they have the largest database.

Patterson, of course, isn’t disclosing the formula of how Cuil has developed such a broader network with a much smaller number of computers. A search engine index is important because the information, pictures and the contents cannot be found unless they are stored in a database.

However, Cuil’s ace isn’t a bunch of codes crunching numbers in a frenzy but the promise that it will retain no specific information about their users. A Google spokesperson has delivered the usual “competition is good for the masses” speech but analysts say this is the first time, and probably not the last, that they are up against one of their own.

120 billion pages… we took Cuil for a trial run to see what those pages are with the keyword “oronjo,” which has brought in visitors for ReapMoneyOnline.com from Google. Check out the Google screenshot below. That’s 3,890 pages for “oronjo” and ReapMoneyOnline is 7th from the top.

Now, the screenshot below is the last page for the “oronjo” search in Cuil. It says 879 results with nothing about ReapMoneyOnline. We did notice something with this search, certain blogs/websites came up in almost every page. Try it. Any ideas why they do? Does this make a Cuil search more relevant?

We’d certainly welcome another player in the field of relevant search engine results. We do hope Patterson and her gang is on to something. Maybe an end to search engine gaming?

So what do everybody think about Cuil? Will it succeed where Yahoo and MSN failed?

Hello everybody…

ReapMoneyOnline’s been down for nearly a week. There was much nail-biting while we waited for the tech guys to upgrade our account and put RMO back online. Then, the news came… RMO had a WordPress issue. When the database was activated, every time it got accessed, such as when somebody browsed RMO, the action triggers “massively high server loads,” that’s their word and we have no idea what they meant except that it was bad tidings. Sentences that have the words issues, databases, servers, and loads in them almost always denote catastrophies for us poor bloggers.

Three deep breaths and we were on the WordPress drill to expunge any impish code that might be behind the mischief: deactivate or delete all plugins. We got rid of them all to be sure but, still, the dreaded words “failure to connect to the database” stared blankly at us.

No hysterical outbursts occurred. Fact, we saw a bit of humor in the situation, a glimmer of the dark clouds’ silver lining, like what one of our college professors used to say. In the last post we had before RMO took a dive, we talked about overhauling the categories and theme. It seemed like this blog of ours really wanted us to start with a clean slate.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, trying to reconstruct our popular posts from back-ups. We hope to do them better this time. We thank everybody for their patience and support.

It turns out that Google and Yahoo have the capability to access the content of a SWF file, they were merely prevented from doing so by the proprietary nature of Adobe’s Flash.

Now, Adobe didn’t only lift that obstacle, it is also working actively with the said search engines to index previously inaccessible content by providing them with optimized Flash Player Technology. We can hear web designers and SEO experts applauding this latest development in indexing technology.

Previously, the only way to get a Flash-driven site in Google is make another text-only site along side it. A script identifies whether the request for a page comes from a bot or a browser (person) and then serves up the approriate file: Flash for people and text for bots. In short, it is such a headache SEOing a Flash site. The Adobe-Google-Yahoo collaboration means less work for web developers.

Even non-techie folks like the ReapMoneyOnline team can easily make web pages using Flash so this is a welcome news for web entrepreneurs as well. However, before we rush off to make amazing Flash websites, there are other points to consider, like their bandwidth requirement and the kind of market we want to hit.

What is AdSense?

AdSense is a way to make money online by placing advertisements in our blogs or websites. AdSense lets publishers or bloggers make money simple and fast without selling anything. It is a service provided by Google, which makes it stable and trusty.

Some webmasters have reported earning a lot of money thru AdSense. However, they have been in the game for years. For newbies, it is best to expect AdSense earnings of $2-3 per day. As our content and ranking grows, our income will follow.

AdSense is contextual, meaning the ads that shows in the ad block are related to the subject of a particular web page. It does not work for all kinds of blogs or websites. It is best to use AdSense if most visitors of our blogs or websites came from Google and other search engines.

How do we use AdSense?

It is easy to make use of AdSense, simply follow the steps:

AdSense is a Google service and we need to have a Gmail account. Go get one here.

Sign up for AdSense here. The sign-up page is also our login page.

Follow the instructions to put some JavaScript code into the template of our blog or website. If we are using a blog platform or a Content Management System (CMS), there are plugins or widgets that make this simple.

When visitors from Google come to our web page, they see ads that automatically adjust to its content. When they click on an ad link, Google counts that click and we get rewarded for it. The clicks we get usually depends on the composition of our visitors (the more web savvy crowd are less likely to click on AdSense), the source of our visitors (those coming from the search engines are more likely to click), and the position or location of the ad blocks.

A word of caution, do not try to cheat AdSense. Many have tried and failed, resulting in banned accounts.
